Summer Employment Opportunities Riverboat Discovery & Gold Dredge 8

We are continually accepting applications for our summer season. Our season runs from mid-May through mid-September. We recruit an enthusiastic team of employees, and we offer a bonus incentive to those who complete the season.

We will begin our interview process for the upcoming season in January. We plan to conduct interviews with qualified applicants on selected days in January, February, and March.

RIVERBOAT DISCOVERY
Positions Available: Guide , Deckhand , Reservations Clerk , Accounting Clerk , Retail Sales Associate , Dining Hall Associate , Kitchen Assistant , Dishwasher/ Donut Maker , Grounds Crew .
Guide

Guides greet passengers and serve as ambassadors for Alaskan Native culture; conduct the tour of the Chena Indian Village; serve coffee and doughnuts and assist Deckhands in the snack bar during busy times; act as salespeople by ringing up sales and opening and closing registers. Other duties include assisting passengers with questions. Hours: 30-35 hours per week plus some overtime required.

Qualifications: Ability to speak well before large groups of people; outgoing and cheerful disposition; first-hand knowledge of an Alaskan Native culture; communicate well with others; and prior experience with or ability to learn to operate a cash register.

Deckhand
Deckhands cast off at departure and secure the Riverboat Discovery on landing; maintain the safety and cleanliness of the boat; staff the snack bar when passengers are on board; provide general passenger assistance and if necessary provide emergency first aid until trained EMT’s arrive. Hours: 35 hours per week plus some overtime required.

Qualifications: Ability to represent the Riverboat Discovery in a courteous, professional manner at all times; mandatory drug testing per the U.S. Coast Guard; applicants over age 21 preferred (Alaska law requires individuals to be 21 to serve alcohol).

Reservations Clerk
Reservations Clerks answer phones; respond to inquiries about the Riverboat Discovery and Gold Dredge 8; and take reservations for both attractions. Clerks sell and/or collect tickets and perform other duties as directed by the Reservations Manager. Hours: 32-40 hours per week.

Qualifications: Ability to communicate well in person and over the phone; operate office machines accurately and efficiently (computer, calculator, phone and radio systems); and represent the Riverboat Discovery in a courteous, professional manner in order to provide excellent customer service.

Accounting Clerk
Accounting Clerks enter accounts receivable into a accounting program; prepare invoices and journal entries; prepare Daily Receipts Ledgers; post credit card payments to Accounts Receivable; assist with timekeeping; and perform cash counting and reservations support duties. Hours: 36-40 hours a week with the possibility of overtime.

Qualifications: Ability to perform routine and complex accounting duties with a high degree of accuracy; and work well independently and as a team. Prior accounting experience and/or classes preferred.

Retail Sales Associate
Serve as a customer service representative for visitors to the Riverboat Discovery. Assist visitors with purchases; prepare and stock merchandise for sale; perform inventory control duties; organize and distribute merchandise. Perform other duties related to the successful operation of a retail store including cleaning and moderate lifting. Hours: 36-40 hours per week.

Qualifications: Ability to represent the Riverboat Discovery in a courteous and professional manner in order to provide top-notch customer service; sell merchandise according to sales training, strategies, and goals; complete task efficiently and accurately according to policies and procedures; operate a PC-based point of sale system (possess computer and mathematical skills) while properly handling cash and making change for customers; communicate and work well with others; perform tasks independently with attention to detail; work in a fast-paced environment that requires you to be “quick on your feet” for eight hours a day; and have fun with teammates, managers and other employees!

Dining Hall Associate
Serve as a customer service representative for visitors to the Riverboat Discovery. Provide dining service to guests and meet their needs to ensure a pleasurable dining experience; including set up/removal of food service items; greeting and seating guests in a prompt and courteous manner; resetting tables according to service standards; perform closing duties and side work; maintain sanitation and safety standards. Assist visitors with gift purchases, distribute merchandise. Hours: 36-40 hours per week.

Kitchen Assistant
Kitchen Assistants primarily work in our kitchen area with some duties performed in our dining hall. Their duties include operating kitchen cooking equipment to heat fixed menu food, all food prep for our gift shop café, serving food in dining hall, and maintaining the cleanliness standards required in the kitchen. Hours: 40 hours per week

Qualifications: Ability to represent the Riverboat Discovery in a courteous and professional manner in order to provide top-notch customer service; food preparation knowledge is a must, food service/prep experience preferred; cooking terminology and ingredients knowledge; ability to follow written recipes; determine when food is done; basic arithmetic and portion control tools; ability to work in a hot humid kitchen area; ability to work in a fast paced environment for at least six hours at a time; ability to carry heavy serving dishes and pitchers; and have fun while at work.

Dishwasher/Donut Maker
Duties include some set-up and removal of place settings in our dining hall; operating commercial dishwashers; ensuring cleanliness of dishes including some polishing of glass for water spot removal; operate the doughnut-making machine, clean the machine and Commissary, and ensure that doughnuts are properly produced, boxed, and refrigerated. Hours: 35-40 hours per week

Qualifications: Ability to represent the Riverboat Discovery in a courteous and professional manner in order to provide top-notch customer service; attention to detail; ability to follow instructions and remain focused while performing repetitive duties; ability to work independently and meet production targets; meet a high standard of personal cleanliness.

Grounds Crew (full-time and part-time)
Full-time (12:30 to 9:30 PM) and Part-time (5:30 to 9:30 PM) Grounds Crew members clean the Riverboat Discovery and premises twice a day—after the boat returns to the dock at 12:30 pm, and again at 5:30 pm. Duties include dusting, vacuuming, emptying trash, washing windows, cleaning restrooms, and miscellaneous warehouse/grounds maintenance duties; some off-site maintenance tasks to be performed as directed. Hours: 20-40 hours per week.

Qualifications: Attention to detail, punctuality, reliability, and ability to work independently and as a team.

GOLD DREDGE 8
Positions Available: Customer Service Specialist - Inside , Customer Service Specialist - Outside, Tour Guide.
Customer Service Specialist - Inside

Serve as a customer service representative for visitors. Assist visitors with purchases; weigh and assemble lockets; assist passengers with gold panning and boarding the train; prepare and stock merchandise for sale; perform inventory control duties; organize and distribute merchandise. Customer Service Specialist - Outside
Fill pokes with pay dirt and offer them to visitors; demonstrate gold panning techniques and assist visitors with gold panning; assist with preparation and clean-up of panning area; assist passengers with purchases; weigh gold and assemble lockets; sell tickets at the train stations; assist passengers with boarding of the train; and fill in at the Gift Shop or on grounds maintenance as needed. Hours: 36-40 hours per week with some overtime required.

Qualifications: Ability to represent Gold Dredge 8 in a courteous and professional manner in order to provide top-notch customer service; demonstrate panning techniques; operate a cash register and credit card machine; and perform a variety of tasks related to the operation of a gold mine.

Tour Guide
Responsible for ensuring the Dredge is “tour ready” before guests arrive (safe, clean, etc), provide accurate scripted information to 40+ guests at a time at different “stations” throughout the Dredge; maintain professional and friendly attitude; assist in dining hall; grounds maintenance. Hours: 30-40 hours per week

Qualifications: Ability to represent Gold Dredge 8 in a courteous and professional manner in order to provide top-notch customer service; comfortable speaking to large groups (approx 40+); ability to retain and relay historical information about the Gold Dredge 8 to visitors; public speaking experience preferred

~Wages range between $10.50 and $13.00 per hour, depending on the position, and include a $1.00 per hour bonus paid at the end of the season.
